Here is an easy guide to understand how bias in natural language processing works. We explain why sexist technologies like search engines are not just an unfortunate coincidence.

What is bias in translation programs?

Have you ever used machine translation for translating a sentence to Estonian? In some languages, like Estonian, pronouns, and nouns do not indicate gender. When translating to English, the software has to make a choice. Which word becomes male and which female?

The proliferation of AI, however, raises a number of ethical questions on data privacy, fairness, bias, and accountability. In the future, will AI decide who is insured and who is not? Who will get which level of insurance coverage? And will vulnerable groups be left behind uninsured? This talk focuses on the risks related to the use of AI in the insurance sector.

This event is organized by the Department of Strategy and Innovation.

After failing to fully recover from the last financial crisis, the pandemic poses major new challenges for banks. However, this time, banks are not the problem, but part of the solution. By providing credit to the economy, banks play a crucial role in fighting the pandemic by ensuring the transmission of fiscal and monetary stimulus to the economy. Nevertheless, banks are not among the winners of the pandemic, suffering from a drop in interest rates and from increased provisions for non-performing loans.

In addition, the financial sector is still undergoing a profound transformation process. The regulatory environment remains a headwind for financial institutions, and new technologies are changing the rules of the game. Populism and political and geopolitical uncertainties create additional challenges, curtailing investment and risk-taking. Finally, the ever-increasing focus for investors and corporations alike on topics around ESG – environmental, social, and governance – and sustainability brings with it a whole new set of challenges and opportunities that need to be navigated. An important element in successfully tackling these challenges is a healthy corporate culture that allows for the necessary change to happen – including an increase in female representation and a better gender balance in corporate board rooms.

This conference will present an outlook on these developments and their implications for the financial services industry and economies at large, primarily presented by leading female exponents of the financial services industry as well as key public authorities.

Algorithms – and the actors behind them – are surveying and impacting ever more dimensions of our modern lives. They recommend which movies to watch; they calculate risk appropriate credit scores; and they play a role in meting out “just” punishment; to only name a few areas. At the same time, they correct imperfect human decisions and add new informational dimensions to decisions prior impossible. To assess and evaluate the impeding transformations of normative orders in a predictive society, we approach algorithms in light of the juxtaposition of trust and control. Why and under which conditions do – or don’t – we trust algorithms? Indeed, can and should we trust them? Especially because their algorithmic normativity was (not) produced in justificatory fora where trust is brought about in and through social conflicts? But then, how much trust – if any – should algorithms put into us as citizens? For example, do they have to presume us non-dangerous and harmless? Vice versa, how much control do we need to retain over algorithms? And how much control should they exert over us? Can we use algorithms to control the effect of algorithms and thus create a meta-level of trust? Especially in order to negate, or as a matter of fact: to entertain, the freedom to deviate in the algorithmic society?

Prof. Burkhard Schäfer (University of Edinburgh, Professor of Computational Legal Theory)

Opening Remarks by Prof. Enrico Schleiff (President of Goethe University)

Opening Remarks by Prof. Rainer Forst (Speaker of ConTrust and Normative Orders)

Welcoming Remarks & Comment Prof. Klaus Günther (Dean of the Faculty of Law Goethe University)

Convenors: Prof. Christoph Burchard (Goethe University, Professor of Criminal Justice, PI of ConTrust and "Normative Orders") and Prof. Indra Spiecker gen.

Risks of discrimination related to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and automated decision-making are already well-documented in several domains, including policing, hiring, loans, and benefit fraud detection. In the past year, a number of cases have indicated that the health and medical sector are not immune to the discriminatory effects of AI. Studies have shown that algorithms widely used across hospitals and health systems to guide patient care, on everything from heart surgery and kidney care, to cesarean birth and prioritizing patients following the backlog of appointments caused by coronavirus, can be racially and culturally biased, and can exacerbate existing health inequalities.

• In this panel we will discuss the risks of bias, AI-driven discrimination, and unfair differentiation in the health sector. Is there something specific to discrimination risks in the health sector?

• Are the trade-offs between the benefits and risks of AI different in this sector as opposed to other sectors?

• Is there a health sector-specific notion of fairness? If so, are sector-specific rules needed for AI in health?

• Should legal protection against AI-driven discrimination and unfair differentiation be improved and who should attend to this: non-discrimination scholars or bioethicists?

We aim for a lively discussion panel: no presentations and no slides, but a discussion among the panelists and with the audience. The panel will be made up of experts from different disciplines and backgrounds.

Moderator:

Frederik Zuiderveen Borgesius iHub & iCIS Institute for Computing and Information Sciences, Radboud University Nijmegen (NL)

Speakers:

Minna Ruckenstein Tena Šimonović Einwalter Equinet (HR)

Carlos Castillo Universitat Pompeu Fabra (ES)

Tamar Sharon iHub, Radboud University Nijmegen (NL)

Earlier this month, Google fired one of its most prominent Black researchers over an email she sent criticizing the company’s efforts in both hiring a diverse workforce and removing biases that have been built into its artificial intelligence technology. Her dismissal has sparked rage both internally at Google and around the world as yet another example of Big Tech’s failures to adequately address diversity, equity and inclusion. The year 2020 has been a time of reckoning for this country around the impact of systemic racism on the health, safety, mobility and socioeconomic status of Black and brown people in the United States.

While technology has certainly helped jump start movements like Black Lives Matter, critics say it has also played a role in not just amplifying racial tensions but has also actively reinforced systemic racism through the lack of diversity in its creators and the inherent biases within its algorithms themselves. Jim Steyer, CEO and founder of Common Sense Media and author of the book Which Side of History: How Technology Is Reshaping Technology and Our Lives, has devoted a section of the book to exploring just how entangled Silicon Valley has become in our national history of racism and inequality.

In this program, Steyer will be joined by book contributors Ellen Pao, CEO of Project Incude, and Theodore Shaw, director of the Center for Civil Rights at the University of North Carolina School of Law. They will discuss technology’s role in exacerbating racial inequality in the United States and the leadership role Big Tech needs to take in order to move the nation forward. We’ll explore how racial inequality is baked into the very fabric of technological platforms, and how diversity, inclusion and equity might hold the solution to changing its course.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are targets for global development adopted in September 2015, set to be achieved by 2030. All countries of the world have agreed to work towards achieving these goals. Our SDG Tracker presents data across all available indicators from the Our World in Data database, using official statistics from the UN and other international organizations. It is the first publication that tracks global progress towards the SDGs and allows people around the world to hold their governments accountable to achieving the agreed goals.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals are defined in a list of 169 SDG Targets. Progress towards these Targets is agreed to be tracked by 232 unique Indicators. Here is the full list of definitions. This new version of our SDG-Tracker was launched on 28th June 2018. We will keep this up-to-date with the most recent data and SDG developments through to the end of the 2030 Agenda. For many Indicators data is available, but major data gaps remain. If you are aware of high-quality data we have yet to include please notify us. We hope that this collaborative approach allows us to support the United Nations in developing the most complete and up-to-date sources for tracking global progress to 2030.

On an international level, it campaigns to end violence against women and girls. In Germany, it also focuses on promoting social diversity and overcoming restrictive role models.

The founders of the MaLisa Foundation have many years of international experience. Since 1998, Maria Furtwängler has served as a voluntary doctor with German Doctors and witnessed the everyday presence of violence against women in the slums of Nairobi, Calcutta, Gujarat and in the Philippines, where it has come to be seen as part of normality. During her travels through Cambodia and the Philippines, Elisabeth was also confronted by the impact and consequences of the sexual exploitation of young girls and women. In order to provide practical help, Maria and Elisabeth Furtwängler founded the MaLisa Home in 2011, a safe house for girls who had been victims of human trafficking and enforced prostitution in the Philippines.

The Gender Advocates Data Hub is an online platform showcasing data and evidence, data visualizations, stories, tools and country-, region-, and issue-specific resources for and by gender advocates. It looks beyond the numbers to tell stories about progress within countries and to show the faces and voices of individual women and girls and their unique perspective on progress towards gender equality.

Through interactive data visualizations and regional, goal and country profiles, the Gender Advocates Data Hub enables advocates to easily unpack insights and findings from our 2019 SDG Gender Index. Advocates can visit the Gender Advocates Data Hub to compare country performances across regions, generate an interpretation of global trends, explore the SDGs based on cross-cutting thematic areas of interest, or read about the girls and women who are using data to drive action in their communities.

Utilising Tableau software and data visualization tools, the Gender Advocates Data Hub is geared for advocates working to encourage countries across the world to make faster progress on gender equality laws, policies and budget decisions.

GenderCC is working to ensure that gender dimensions are fully integrated into climate policy. Gender responsive approaches must be developed and implemented in adaptation, mitigation and low-carbon development. Finance, technology sharing and capacity building, as well as outreach and participation, must also be gender responsive to meet the needs of women and men.

Equal participation of women and men, and commitment to gender justice in international agreements is an important step, yet this alone is not sufficient. International arrangements and national plans need to integrate inclusive and gender responsive climate policy.

GenderCC opposes high-risk technologies such as nuclear-power, geo-engineering and carbon capture and storage, genetic engineering and monoculture plantations. Moreover, GenderCC opposes the prevalence of market-based schemes over other policies and measures.

GenderCC played a central role in initiating the Women and Gender Constituency, which was officially recognised in 2009. The goal of this observer group is to channel the voices of women’s and gender civil society organisations participating in the UNFCCC process, reaching out to the global community on issues of climate change and the UNFCCC process.

GenderCC members represent a wide range of initiatives, networks and individuals working at international, local and national level, through advocacy, capacity building and pilot projects.

Why has anger become such a dominant theme in today's world that people have even spoken of an "age of anger"? Is it conceivable that this emotionalization could also have a positive effect, under what conditions? In terms of the history of philosophy and religion, two approaches to this topic can be identified. On the one hand, a complete rejection, in Buddhism, for example, and in Stoicism; on the other hand, the approving qualification of anger as a virtue, under special circumstances, for example, in Aristoteles and Thomas von Aquin. Absolute negation has a detrimental effect when certain sensations are so excluded, including positively experienced sensations. Essentially, two causes can be identified for the increasing affliction by anger in our society. On the one hand, the evaporation of traditional as well as new values; on the other hand, the all too arbitrary expression of anger in the social media. In addition, it has the effect that more and more anger-filled protest actions, of youth, of women, show a challenge to traditional specifications. Meanwhile, anger as a popular and triumphant affect misses the mark. A binding, moral force can only emerge when anger gains coherence, in its sustainability, intensity, and reach.
Digital Agricultural Technologies (DATs) are innovations that enable farmers and agribusiness entrepreneurs to leapfrog to increase their productivity, efficiency, and competitiveness, facilitate access to markets, improve nutritional outcomes and enhance resilience to climate change. These technologies range from mobile apps to digital identities for farmers to solar applications for agriculture to portable agriculture devices. DATs are increasingly becoming indispensable in the global food and agriculture sector, from fast and convenient information delivery to providing virtual marketplaces. Considering the fact that digital technologies can accelerate agro-food outcomes is juxtaposed with low adoption rates of the same, the World Bank’s operations are increasingly incorporating digital agriculture as a critical element in its operations. Thus, it is important to study digital agriculture technologies in further detail.

This five-week course will provide a high-level overview of DAT concepts, potential impact, range of technologies available, used cases as well as forward-looking technologies. The course will introduce the participants to different agriculture data platforms already available and will encourage them to discover the scope and utility of the open data platforms for analytics and intelligence in agriculture. Participants will be required to engage in discussion forums with their peers and complete quizzes throughout the course.

Problem sets requiring R programming will be used to test understanding and ability to implement basic data analyses. We will use visualization techniques to explore new data sets and determine the most appropriate approach. We will describe robust statistical techniques as alternatives when data do not fit assumptions required by the standard approaches. By using R scripts to analyze data, you will learn the basics of conducting reproducible research.

Given the diversity in educational background of our students we have divided the course materials into seven parts. You can take the entire series or individual courses that interest you. If you are a statistician you should consider skipping the first two or three courses, similarly, if you are biologists you should consider skipping some of the introductory biology lectures. Note that the statistics and programming aspects of the class ramp up in difficulty relatively quickly across the first three courses. We start with simple calculations and descriptive statistics. By the third course will be teaching advanced statistical concepts such as hierarchical models and by the fourth advanced software engineering skills, such as parallel computing and reproducible research concepts.

Thousands of routine and low-skill jobs will be eliminated by automation, A.I. and digital hyper-connectivity. However, these same advances present new opportunities, like:

- New job creation
- Increased productivity
- Improved delivery of public services

This course emphasizes the urgency of developing human capital in meeting the challenges of the coming decades. Developing countries will need to take rapid action to invest in their people as innovation continues to accelerate. Themes in the course include: artificial intelligence, the gig economy, world of work, the future of work, labor market, policy makers, new technologies, digital economy, jobs of the future, machine learning, and labor force.

Despite calls for solidarity across borders and countless local support initiatives, various incidents prove that the corona outbreak has also given rise to a series of racist attacks against Chinese people and people with Asian looking features both on the streets and in social media networks. A team of researchers from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research has now investigated the use of discriminating language against Chinese people in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic on Twitter.

“When normally we analyse societal effects of weather extremes, now we used the corona outbreak as a study case to better understand social responses to extreme events”, explains Leonie Wenz, author and researcher at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). “Using social media data, we basically counted English language tweets containing a set of key word combinations like Chinese AND Corona AND hate and examined the evolution of this daily tweet count since the corona outbreak”, Annika Stechemesser, co- author and also at PIK, adds. “The picture thus unveiled was quite striking: On March 11th the WHO declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic; stock markets around the world crashed –and within the first half of March, the number of offensive tweets in our dataset increased by more than 1000%”, she lays out.

However, it is only since the late 1990s that we have begun to see the emergence of a genuinely digital capitalism with the commercial Internet at its core. Leading digital companies such as Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon are assuming a key position for ever larger parts of the economy. They have not only survived periodic crises of capitalism unscathed, but have even grown from them. At the present time, when the acute crisis of public health is about to turn into a socio-economic crisis of the global economy, it is therefore necessary to ask: What is digital capitalism? How are digitalisation and socio-economic crises related? And: What can we learn from this about a post-Corona world?

Philipp Staab is Professor of “Sociology of the Future of Work” at the Humboldt University of Berlin and the Einstein Center Digital Future (ECDF). Stone, sociology professor at Hunter College and the Graduate Center at CUNY, and Lovejoy, a sociologist and senior research associate at Brandeis’s Institute on Assets and Social Policy, interviewed professional women to explore the real reasons women leave their careers to devote time to their families. Following-up with the same group a decade later, the authors’ new book documents the experience of women returning to the workplace. While most of these well-educated high-achievers spent the interim years as capable “supermoms,” they were shunted to lower-paying contingent positions, often in the disproportionally female non-profit sector, and denied both the salary and leadership opportunities more appropriate to their accomplishments and potential.

In 2017, a routine network television investigation led Ronan Farrow to a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood's most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family. This is the untold story of the exotic tactics of surveillance and intimidation deployed by wealthy and connected men to threaten journalists, evade accountability, and silence victims of abuse. And it's the story of the women who risked everything to expose the truth and spark a global movement.

Farrow will be in conversation with Sunny Hostin, the Emmy-nominated co-host of The View. The index is the most comprehensive tool available to explore the state of gender equality across 129 countries (covering 95% of the world’s girls and women), 14 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and 51 targets linked to issues inherent in the SDGs.

The 2019 SDG Gender Index finds that, with just 11 years to go until 2030, nearly 40% of the world’s girls and women – 1.4 billion – live in countries failing on gender equality.

Another 1.4 billion live in countries that “barely pass”. Eberhardt, a professor of psychology at Stanford, is one of the foremost experts on unconscious racial bias. Her important new book draws on research—both in the lab and in real-world contexts such as courtrooms, prisons, boardrooms, and on the street—and her own experience to show that you don’t have to be racist to be biased. Nearly all of us are biased, she argues, however much we believe in equality. Tracing bias through all level of society, Eberhardt illustrates how it affects representations and interactions in the media, education, and business. But because these inherent prejudices are in some sense a basic part of human nature, Eberhardt, named one of Foreign Policy’s 100 Leading Global Thinkers, believes that we can work together to eradicate them.

In this entry we present data and research on economic inequalities between men and women. Here is an overview of some of the points we cover below:

- All over the world men tend to earn more than women.
- Women are often underrepresented in senior positions within firms, while at the same time they tend to be overrepresented in low-paying jobs.
- In many countries men are more likely to own land and control productive assets than women.
- Women often have limited influence over important household decisions, including how their own personal earned income is spent. [Jump to this section]

Whenever the data allows it, we also discuss below how these inequalities have been changing over time. As we show, although economic gender inequalities remain common and large, they are today smaller than they used to be some decades ago.

- In most countries the gender pay gap has decreased in the last couple of decades.
- Gender-equal inheritance systems, which were rare until recently, are now common across the world.
- Composite indices that cover multiple dimensions show that on the whole gender inequalities have been shrinking substantially over the last century.
